Convincing your company to move you abroad
In recent years, many companies have limited the number of employees they send to work abroad. Of those that still do, employees are being are being far less rewarded and compensated for their relocation than they have been in the past.
This is mostly due to the fact that companies around the world are cutting staff and expenses to avoid going out of business. Many companies have decided that moving people to work abroad is not worth the cost that the company has to spend for relocation. Also, with technology development and the ability to communicate with people overseas, moving people abroad has become less of a necessity for businesses that work on a global scale.
This does not mean, however, that it is not worthwhile to consider getting an overseas job assignment from your employer, but you may need to make certain concessions and considerations when asking for a job assignment abroad. Even with new technology, it is still important for businesses to have representatives for their company abroad. This means that it is still very possible that you can get to move abroad to work for your company.
Many businesses have long-term goals that include expansion. In today’s economy, it is important for businesses that wish to expand to emerge in the global market. Truly successful businesses are often the ones that expand to markets across the world. Because this is a long-term goal for many businesses, it is very likely that you may be chosen if you wish to help your company emerge in the global market by becoming a representative worker abroad. It is very important for you to understand your company’s long-term goals in order to help your company reach their goals, thereby allowing you to reach yours.
It is imperative for you to prove to your boss that you are a strong and experienced candidate to be moved abroad to represent your company. If your desire for a job abroad is motivated more by an interest in the experience and not by monetary gain alone, then you are much more likely to be offered a job overseas. Companies are looking for people who want to move abroad for the experience and for moving their company ahead, not for employees who are looking for a larger paycheck. In today’s economy, moving overseas for employment has to be because of a desire for seeing another culture and not for the financial benefit.
In order to convince your company to send you abroad, it is a good idea to offer to go work abroad for an amount that benefits both you and your company. It is probably best to ask for your normal salary and then travel expenses. Since you are volunteering to work for your company overseas then you are much more likely to get picked for the job if you make small concessions and do not expect a lot of extra perks.
Getting your company to move you abroad is not an easy task and it will require a lot of thought and work on your part. However, if this is something that you really want to do then you should be willing to try something new and market yourself to be moved abroad.
